3.2 Employment conditions
Employees at the head office in Zollikofen work a full 42.5 hours per week on a flexitime basis, with a tried-and-tested home office concept available to them. We rely on the independence and personal responsibility of our employees. That is why, contrary to the general trend, we are maintaining extensive home office options. According to the 2023 commuter survey, employees at the head office worked from home for almost 50% of their workload on average. This shows that the mix of being in the office and working from home is very popular.

« I have been part of SQS IT for over 20 years and it still motivates me when my energy is reflected in the joy that a solved problem brings back to me. »

We offer our auditors an annual working time model so that they can deal with fluctuations in their workload during the year in a self-determined and flexible manner. SQS has also been working with freelance auditors for many years in order to balance peak workloads and cover specialised expertise. They are employed on a contract basis and work variable hours, tailored to their needs and the requirements of SQS.
All permanent SQS employees are entitled to at least five weeks' holiday per year - one week more than required by law. Employees under the age of 20 and over the age of 50 enjoy one additional week's holiday per year.
Early retirement is possible from the age of 60. At the same time, SQS also offers employment opportunities beyond the normal retirement age. This factor will become even more important in the coming years as a result of the demographic change.
At the end of 2024, SQS employed 169 people in permanent positions (previous year: 171). In times of a skilled labour shortage, offering part-time jobs is a key factor for us in attracting and retaining committed, competent employees. Accordingly, we offer this option for all our functions. At the end of 2024, 51 employees took advantage of this option. This is 3 people more than in the previous year and corresponds to over 30% of our permanent employees.
Social benefits
Occupational pension scheme
Our pension fund forms a strong foundation for the future of our employees. At the end of 2024, all permanent employees in Switzerland were insured with us - with a pension solution that goes far beyond the statutory minimum. Attractive employer contributions, an above-average interest rate and three optional plans offer both security and flexibility.

In order to secure the structural risk capacity and profitability of our employee pension scheme in the long term, we initiated the evaluation of a possible affiliation to a collective foundation in the 2024 financial year. Such a strategic realignment should not only further increase financial stability, but also optimise administrative costs, offer insured persons added value and secure the future viability of the employee benefits foundation. We are pursuing these considerations with the clear aim of offering our employees a reliable and efficient pension scheme in the long term.
Pension benefits are also a central element of our employer strategy. In a highly competitive labour market, they help to attract qualified employees, retain them in the long term and create meaningful jobs.
Others
In addition to the extraordinary benefits under the occupational pension scheme, permanent employees benefit from other excellent social benefits. These include, for example, a one-off marriage and birth premium, the topping up of statutory child allowances or the payment of the insurance premium for daily sickness benefits insurance (KTG) by the employer. During statutory maternity- or paternity leave, SQS continues to pay 100% of the salary.
The accident insurance benefits are particularly worth mentioning in this context. In the event of an accident, employees are insured for the following benefits in addition to the statutory minimum benefits:
-
Private ward nursing care benefits (worldwide)
-
Integrity capital (in the event of disability) in the amount of two AHV annual salaries
-
Death capitital in the amount of one AHV annual salary
SQS covers the full premium costs of the supplementary insurance.

Training and further education
There is no training program for auditors on the market. Accordingly, SQS has to train its employees itself. We therefore invest heavily in the internal training and further education of our auditors. A complex qualification process must be completed before new employees are introduced to this area. This includes numerous internal courses, observation assignments during audits by colleagues and, in some cases, even technical examinations by standard setters.
In 2024, SQS employees completed a total of over 1,800 training days. In addition to the regular introduction of new employees, a wide range of topics were covered, such as changes to Swiss law and to assessed standards and norms, as well as specialist and industry-specific requirements and developments. There were also workshops with customers or on the further development of SQS.
We are delighted that another SQS commercial apprentice successfully completed his vocational training in 2024. There are currently no further apprentices in training. This is mainly due to the KV reform, which came into force in 2024. SQS is closely monitoring the implementation of this educational reform and will evaluate in the coming years whether training places can be offered again that meet the requirements for a substantive training program.
Occupational health and safety
In 2024, permanent employees in Switzerland recorded 1,476 days of absence due to illness or accident - an average of 1.5 days per employee. This figure represented a slight increase on the previous year and was around 15% above the multi-year average. An analysis has shown that this increase was due to a number of long-term absences that were not directly related to work at SQS.
Accordingly, we currently saw no need for action with regard to structural issues. The existing measures for physical and mental health protection will be continued. All SQS employees have access to free external social counselling if required. Almost all workstations at the head office are equipped with electrically height-adjustable desks that allow employees to work ergonomically. In cases of ongoing health challenges, SQS offers case management in cooperation with our insurance partners.
